    Justice and correctional setting considerations

Functional Capacity Assessments completed within custodial or correctional environments require careful consideration due to environmental restriction and limited opportunity to observe daily functioning within typical community contexts. Highly structured settings may restrict access to everyday activities such as personal care routines, meal preparation, household tasks, community access and transport use. As a result, functional performance observed in custody may not fully represent functional capacity required for safe and sustainable living in the community.

Individuals with a history of prolonged incarceration may demonstrate de-skilling across daily living skills, executive functioning and community participation. These changes may not be fully observable within custody and may become more apparent during transition back into the community as environmental demands increase.

Where relevant, functional opinions are considered alongside psychiatric, neuropsychological, clinical psychology or behaviour support information to support comprehensive understanding of functional presentation and support requirements. Determination of diagnosis or legal decision-making capacity remains outside Occupational Therapy scope and is addressed by the relevant clinical discipline where required.
