Assistive Technology assessments are completed to identify equipment required to support functional performance safety access and participation in everyday activities. Assessments are based on functional need and the impact of impairment on task performance rather than product preference.

Occupational Therapy assessment focuses on how functional impairment affects a person’s ability to complete everyday activities and how equipment may support safe and effective task completion. Recommendations are formed using observed functional performance, task demands, environmental considerations and clinical reasoning.

What is our Assessment Process?

Assistive Technology assessment commonly involves a combination of the following depending on the referral purpose and complexity:

  • Review of available information including Functional Capacity Assessments and relevant reports from treating clinicians such as physiotherapists or other health professionals
  • Direct Occupational Therapy assessment of functional performance
  • Home visit assessment to observe task completion mobility transfers and environmental interaction within the person’s usual living environment
  • Where required equipment trials to assess suitability fit and functional impact

Equipment trials may occur within the person’s home or at a supplier showroom. In some situations short-term hire equipment may be explored to support trialling prior to recommendation subject to available funding and the availability of the specific equipment required for trial.

What types of Assistive Technology and Equipment is Considered?

Assistive Technology and equipment considered during assessment may include:

  • Mobility aids including manual and powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters
  • Seating and postural support systems
  • Electric Beds and medical mattresses
  • Hoists transfer aids and lifting equipment
  • Bathroom and toileting equipment

What is involved in your Recommendations and Reporting?

Following assessment and any required trials a written report is completed outlining assessment findings, functional considerations and clinically reasoned equipment recommendations. Reports are prepared for submission to the relevant agency or funding body as required by the referral context.

Occupational Therapy assessment provides recommendations only. Decisions regarding equipment provision funding approval sit outside the Occupational Therapy role and are determined by the relevant agency or parties.
