Funcional Capacity Assessment Focus

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that examines how a person performs everyday activities within their usual environment and how physical, cognitive and emotional abilities impact daily functioning and participation and assists in identifying appropriate support needs.

Personal Activities of Daily Living (PADLs)

Personal Activities of Daily Living are a primary indicator of functional status and capacity for independent living. Assessment focuses on essential self care tasks such as eating, grooming, showering, dressing and toileting. Observation considers the physical and cognitive demands of task completion, safety and the level of assistance required to complete activities independently and safely.

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs)

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living involve more complex tasks required for independent living and participation in the community. Assessment typically focuses on activities such as meal preparation, household management, shopping, use of transport, medication management, financial tasks, communication and community access. Observation considers the physical and cognitive demands of task completion, safety and the level of assistance required for tasks to be completed independently and reliably.

Cognition and Executive Functioning

Assessment considers attention, memory, problem solving, planning, judgement and the ability to initiate, sequence and complete tasks. Cognitive functioning is examined in relation to everyday activities and support needs rather than as an isolated skill set. Occupational Therapy assessment does not provide medical or psychological diagnosis and formal diagnostic determination remains the responsibility of appropriately qualified medical or psychological professionals.

Physical Capacity and Mobility

Assessment considers mobility, transfers, balance, strength, coordination, pain, endurance, postural tolerance and sensory function as they relate to movement, daily activity performance and safety within the environment.

Psychosocial and Behavioural Factors

Assessment considers psychosocial presentation, emotional regulation, behavioural responses and the functional impact of mental health symptoms on daily functioning, community participation, safety and required supports where relevant.

Environmental and Contextual Factors

Assessment considers how the physical and social environment influences functional performance, including accessibility, layout, equipment, routines and available supports. Findings across relevant domains are integrated to describe current functional capacity and support needs using observed performance, contextual considerations and clinical reasoning.

Functional Capacity Assessments

Functional Capacity Assessment is a core component of Occupational Therapy practice. Independent Functional Capacity Assessments describe how disability or impairment affects everyday functioning at the time of assessment.

Assessment focuses on real world performance within the person’s usual environment and examines how activities are completed, the level of assistance required and how safely and reliably tasks are performed. The purpose of assessment is to provide clear and structured functional information to support planning, review and decision making.

A well executed Functional Capacity Assessment provides a reliable functional foundation that may inform future pathways such as assistive technology, environmental modification, housing consideration or support planning depending on the referral purpose.
